What is a Dartmoor Pony?

¬Ý

The Dartmoor pony is classified as a Rare Breed. They originated and still live as native ponies on the moorlands of Devon, England. Dartmoors combine the good, sound temperament of a child’Äôs pony with the athletic abilities of world-class performers. They are proven safe and sound for riding, driving, and jumping. Fun for all ages, many do double-duty as children’Äôs riding ponies and adult’Äôs driving ponies.

Dartmoor ponies are sturdily built, yet full of quality, ranging in height from 11 to 12.2 hands. The head is fairly small with a broad forehead, large kind eyes and small alert ears. The neck is of average length, strong but not heavy, with stallions having a moderate crest. The shoulder is well laid back with a slight wither. The back is of medium length with the loin and hindquarters strong and well muscled. The tail is set high and both mane and tail are very full. Action is straight, free, low and flowing. The usual colors are bay, brown, black and occasionally grey, chestnut or roan. White markings on the head and legs should be minimal.
